Just time for a quick update.  I am surprised that anyone reads this mundane site when there are such pretty pictures and attractive layouts on other sites.  I love visiting other people’s pages, and seeing how they come up with wonderful ideas.

It is a shiny Monday morning.  And it is laundry and cleaning and all that goes with that.  My heart is heavy for Connie and Cary and Matt.  It keeps me mindful of how good life is for me.  My Daniel and her Daniel shared the same birthday, only a year apart.  And most people probably wouldn’t believe it, but her Daniel was the one that was older.

And yesterday was a stay at home all day kind of day.  I made a shrimp chowder, and a chocolate cake, and just pretty much lounged around all day.  In the evening, around 6:00, Certain Man drug a heavy table in that we had purchased from the Methodist church in Houston, DE when they were getting rid of them.  It weighs a ton, but it has the smoothest Formica top on it and is perfect for doing puzzles.  So he and Middle Daughter dumped out the 1,000 piece jigsaw puzzle that I had bought him for Christmas, and they got started.  Middle Daughter loves puzzles, and Eldest Daughter and youngest Daughter helped for a while.  There was lots of conversation like this:

“Do you think you might get this done tonight?”  Eldest Daughter queries while searching for something that might fit.

“Ain’t no way,”  Says Certain Man decisively.  “I am not going to stay up that late.”

“Besides,” says Middle Daughter, “I still have to study for my test tomorrow.  I’m only going to help for awhile.”

“Ain’t no way to finish this tonight,”  repeats Certain Man.  “This is the dumbest puzzle I have ever seen.  These pieces just don’t fit.  I can’t even find all the edge pieces.  I am about to give up.”  But he kept finding pieces that fit just in time to keep him interested.

“These are really strange pieces.” Said Middle Daughter.  “I don’t think I like them much.”

And so they worked awhile, and then Youngest Daughter lost interest, and Eldest Daughter went home with her husband.  So Certain Man’s Wife pitched in and did a small section, then went and did some other things.  When the time rolled around that Youngest Daughter decided to go to bed, there was only about a fourth of the puzzle left to do.  And the two devoted puzzle-putter-togetherers no longer said anything about not getting it together yet tonight.  They (And CMW, too) knew that there was no turning back.

So, around 11:30, the puzzle was finished.  The box boasts that it is the biggest 1,000 piece puzzle in the world (39″x19″) but I don’t suppose that is official.  It is a pretty picture, and it was a great satisfaction to get it done.

Great family memories from a snowy Sunday.

  1. You wove a beautiful picture of a cozy evening. How much snow did you receive?

  2. I love to get your comments on my site.  I feel the same that mine is so ordinary especially compared to my sister Lucy’s!  (I love your music, by the way!)  It just goes to show, I guess, that the ordinary has charm when put into charming form like you do to your posts!
Thanks for being the “rock of reason” regarding the “rock”!!! You can see by my comments that I am even more adventuresome than Lucy.  I wouldn’t even have asked if it was reasonable or not 🙂  😮

  3. Eldest daughter needs to take a picture of said puzzle before it’s dismantled to share with all of us.  Blessings.

  4. Mary , I love the puzzle picture. The individual pieces are at angles different then I’ve seen before for a puzzle. By the way, I simply love reading your post and any other writing that you do. I still think you need to publish something!!!! Anything!!!!CMW stories, maybe a devotional book, just anything!! We’re getting ready to pick up mom and take her to Jeremy and Cheryls for a special Valentine Supper. I’m sure looking forward to it.

  5. The puzzle is absolutely beautiful.  Praying for your mother this evening !!!  A Valentine’s theme without her Valentine.

  6. Wow, lovely puzzle! And I have at least two from Christmases past that await putting together. I cannot imagine doing a 1000 piecer in one night. So congrats to you and your family for sticking together and getting it done! Now that I think about it, I would probably be doing it solo, so maybe that is a good excuse for it taking me longer. Are you going to frame it or simply put it back in the box?

  7. Moyain, we read blogs for their content, not because of the pretty pictures.  That’s a mighty detailed puzzle…. what is it about puzzles that makes us do them?  I mean, the picture’s right there on the box, all we have to do is look at that right?  But we labor and squint and mutter and try/fail until the thing comes together, then we dismantle it and declare what a fun go it was.  Ain’t human beings funny?

  8. I love reading your posts! They interest me greatly. The puzzle…wow! We do 500 piece ones, that way we get it done, plus our house is small, and I don’t have room to set up a big table. So it’s always fun to see large finished ones. I am wondering, did you get your snowstorm? If so, where are the dooughnuts?

  9. that was all put together in one evening?  Wow.  Impressive.   And i do love you site and you writings.   nothing mundane about either of them!  so there.  ~April

  10. Wow I love that picture.  Looks like I imagine heaven might.  Altho’ there won’t be any need for a church there!  I agree with everyone else that said we love what you write.  We don’t care what your site looks like all that much.  =D I think it looks fine.   I’ve seen some sites that have so much background you can hardly read the words, so you’re doing fine!

  11. wow! that sure does look like a mess to put together, but i’m sure it was fun!…pretty much about the fellowship, and the joy we find in being in other people’s presence…which reminds me of some amazing times that i have had w/ you and your family! thank you so much for everything that you are to me Mary Ann! i feel so blessed to have been able to have gotten to know you the little bit that i have…i love you! -par
