Middle Daughter is on Fall break from school.
Today was one of those lazy days at Shady Acres.
It rained all day.
So she worked on her nine-patch,

Harvest nine patch

She started this little wall-hanging quilt some time ago.  She enjoys drawing, and always has some sort of craft project going.  She has named it
“PATCHES OF SPRING”
and drew all of the blocks before she began to carefully embroider each one.  This is the patch that she is on now:

And I am amazed at how meticulously everything is done.  The pictures do not begin to do justice to this beautiful  piece of art.

After working for a while on the patchwork and doing some ironing and helping to clean up the kitchen, she decided that she wanted to do some harvest decorating for me.  I have a hodge-podge of harvest decorations.  I collect pilgrims and I love the silk fall foilage.  So she decided to give our fireplace a new look.  Usually we have a lighthouse picture with lots of ocean accessories on the mantle with our humpback clock.  She took everything off the mantle except for the clock, and this was the result.

We have a little side window that looks out towards our driveway.  I have an upholstered blanket chest under the window and it is a cozy nook for curling up with a blanket and a book.  This is the window above the reading place.

And beside the blanket chest (you can see it there in the background) is this chair — just waiting for someone to come and sit by the fire for hot chocolate and a visit.

Wait a minute—  maybe you had better wait until Certain Man is ready for his sermon on Sunday.  He uses this room to study, here by his book case and with a good reading light.  He has been suffering from a serious cold this week, and we are hopeful that his voice will be ready when he is!!! Tonight he said that he thinks he will start putting price tags on things in this family room and start selling things.  Was that nice?  I don’t think so, Mr. Yutzy.  (Most of them only have sentimental value, anyhow.)

Your daughter’s wall hanging is beautiful!    ~Would love to sit in your cozy chair by the fire place…..

  2. I’m glad to see your daughters 9 patch quilt.  It is very nice.  I am embroidering a quilt top now.  It has 12 blocks, and I question if there are really enough blocks for a full size quilt, much less a queen size.  I had thought of doing patch work for alternate blocks.  Not having a lot of experience with quilts and quilting, I had a question in my mind if something like that would be advisable.  I got the blocks for a little bit at an estate yard sale, so I’m not sure if I could get any more if I would want them.

  3. I always enjoy your posts.  I especially like the one of Certain Man studying for his sermon.

  4. Deborah has shown me the nine patch and it is BEATUIFUL!  …yes and meticulously done!  Mary your place is always so cozy and inviting.  It seems people are always migrating to your cozy cottage by the road.   I know that your warm heart has a lot to do with that too!!!!!
I’ve been so cold all morning and that hot chocolate and spot by the fire looks right inviting.  I’ll wait till Daniel leaves tho.

  5. Very nice post, great pictures. That wall hanging is beautiful, the embroidery looks very well done. The fall decorating is lovely. Before my daughter married and was still at home I always appreciated her enthusiasm to do things that brightened  our home.  CM has a beautiful setting to relax in as he studies. Yes, I’d love to set there near your fireplace and enjoy your company & hot chocolate in your lovely home.

  6. Wow.  Didn’t know Deborah was so artsy.  She should post some of that kind of stuff on her site, though I can tell you are one pleased Mama to share it on yours.  Hope Daniel is soon well and that none of the rest of you have caught it.  Thank you so much for yesterday.  I had a wonderfully long nap.  Love you.

  7. Wow, the nine patch and fire place and absolutely beautiful!!  I knew she was artsy so I should be surprised.

  8. Thanks for your comment on our loss.  There has been a huge sorrow for me knowing a little girl’s heart is broken.

  10. RL just browsed your site. These men of ours!!! RL agrees with your CM that price tags might be a great idea in our home also! He told me to pass this on that he commends Mr.Yutzy on the idea. LOL

  11. RYC Yes indeed we must avoid any such alliance between these men of ours! They just might be far wiser than we are*don’t let them know I said that* LOL

  12. Your home looks so inviting! I love candles in the windows, it adds such a warmth and welcome. I think you and Lucy had better keep a great distance between those men of yours! You houses might soon be bare! πŸ™‚
I admire the handwork that MD has done. I do not have the patience-or self discipline- for anything like that, and I think when others do I enjoy it even more!
